First Mediaville Montreal event a success!

Event

On October 24, Mediaville Montreal held its first professional development and networking event. As promised, we indeed welcomed over 100 freelancers of all stripes — writers, editors, translators and publishers — at various stages in their careers. Many new professional links were made, and the stage was set for future collaborations, including between the participating organizations.

We hope you enjoyed our excellent speakers, Julie Barlow, Marta Cepek, Christine Hastie, Judith Isherwood of Shoreline Press, Mitch Joel of Twist Image, Stefan Martin of law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain, Remo Scappaticci of accounting firm Rubano Scalia and Denis Lésvesque. If you missed their presentations, or would like a chance to look them over once again, we’ve made some of them available on our new Resources page.

We look forward to staging a bigger and better event next year. In the meantime, we are planning to add plenty of new features to this website. Stay tuned via RSS or sign up to receive e-mail updates.

A special thank you to our volunteers, without whom this event would not have been possible: Marlene Busko, Phillipa Rispin and Peter Woodruff of AMWA Canada; Margaret Goldik and Christina Manolescu of AELAQ; Shanti Maharaj and Roberto Blizzard of EAC Quebec-Atlantic Branch; Guy Rodgers of ELAN; Ian Howarth and Elizabeth Johnston of PWAC Quebec; Everett Larsen, Charles Roburn and Jim Royal of STC Montreal; and Thomas Dean Nordlum.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please leave them here. We look forward to hearing from you.

Giancarlo La Giorgia, co-organizer and webmaster.

Great event. Congratulations to all involved, especially the volunteers who pulled everything together. I particularly enjoyed the wide cross-section of experience and opportunities represented at the event, both by the presenters and the participants. I’m looking forward to next year.

I though it was great–Denis Levesque’s presentation on how to bid for Federal government contracts was worth the price of admission in and of itself. Mitch Joel almost convinced me to give my work away (:)), while Stefan Martin convinced me we must organize so it doesn’t feel like we already are.

Thanks to all the volunteers for a great networking and information activity.

Very good, full of information and opportunity to ask questions. I found the breaks between sessions too short and unless one brought own lunch, there was no opportunity to get some in time before the next session.

Sincere thanks to the organizers and all the volunteers for a well organized activity.

Thanks very much for putting on this event. I thought the point about the need to organize was critical and would be keen to participate in planning an event devoted to this topic specifically.

Also, Giancarlo, you mentioned a ‘create your own website’ presentation/workshop happening on Nov. 4. Is there any chance it’ll become available online? Can’t make it next week :(

Actually, the Master Your Domain web workshop is on November 18. The details are here.

Many thanks for this very useful event. I particularly liked the diversity of speakers, it opened my eyes to some freelancing opportunities I didn’t really know about.

Denis Lévesque’s presentation was a bit long compared to the others, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast…

There’s only one change I would recommend : shorten the pause before the cocktail in order to schmooze more, and get back home sooner (for those of us who have kids, that would be much appreciated!). Thanks again.

I want to thank the blogger very much not only for this post but also for his all previous efforts. I found mediaville.ca to be greatly interesting. I will be coming back to mediaville.ca for more information.
